The New Directions
Immersion Week from June 2nd through
June 12th will kick off the project with
opportunities for you to take part in different
activities, including: an informative introductory
workshop, walking tours, focused discussion groups, and
hands-on design workshops. Your thoughts and ideas
about the streetscape design, economic development,
infrastructure, traffic and circulation, and new
directions for your Town are important contributions
throughout the week.

June 2
Community Workshop 1: Understanding Old Town and SR6

Join us at this workshop to hear a
brief overview of the project and find out how you can
get involved. We will provide an informative
multi-media presentation. Take part in a number of
interactive exercises and small group discussions that
will help uncover the history of the area and identify

One-on-One Interviews
Throughout the day, the
Project Team will be meeting with property owners,
business owners, Council members, local leaders,
residents, developers, and other stakeholders to conduct
confidential interviews. Through these discussions,
specific issues, ideas, and concerns will be identified.

Storefront Drop-In
Interviews
Over
the day, the Project Team will conduct short, informal
interviews with Old Town merchants and employees at
their place of business. The goal will be to identify
specific issues and ideas related to the project.
SATURDAY, June 5
PART I: Pancake Breakfast & Old Town Walk
7:30 a.m. 10:00 a.m.
Property owners, business owners, and community
members are invited to participate in an early morning
walk around Old Town and a pancake breakfast when you
return.
During the walking tour, you are encouraged to pay
particular attention to the unique features of the
streetscape, architectural styles, circulation,
pedestrian patterns, and public spaces to identify
potential areas and ideas for enhancement.
Wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes! (MBTA
buses will transport people to start of walk location
and then back to the Elks Lodge.)
PART II: Old Town Yucca Valley
Issues, Ideas, Values, and Visions
10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m.
After walking the historic heart of Old
Town and while your ideas are still fresh, bring them to
share with others in a fast and fun set of exercises.
Your combined ideas, key issues, values, hopes, and
aspirations for your Town will be used to determine the
framework for designing the future of Old Town.

PART III: Old Town Hands-On
Design Workshop and Presentations

This third part of the Saturday
Visioning Festival program is a fun design workshop. All
community members, merchants, organizations, Town staff,
and elected and appointed officials are invited to join
us and participate in a hands-on design and mapping
exercise, based upon your observations and ideas for the
future.You will be divided into small groups to explore
creative solutions to problems and to develop specific
project ideas and design concepts. Each team will
present their concept, and a composite graphic will be
prepared illustrating a preliminary direction for the
community vision.

PROJECT TEAM DESIGN
STUDIO
Throughout these three days,
the Project Team will refine the design concepts and
vision for Old Town Yucca Valley reflecting the desires
articulated by the community participants.

prepare for an all-day review in the field the next day.

The land use and design
concepts will be displayed to the community during a
two-hour open house. The community is invited to review
the intended directions for Old Town and to provide
comments on these design concepts. Members of the
Project Team will be on-hand to discuss elements of the
draft Vision.

SR 62 Mobile Design
Workshop #1: Caltrans

The Project Team will
participate in an all-day field study with Caltrans and
Town Staff to identify issues, explore ideas, and record
observations specifically pertinent to the SR 62
Streetscape Master Plan.

SR Mobile Design Workshop
#2: Community-Wide
8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
A second all-day mobile
workshop is scheduled for Saturday, June 12 in which
community members are invited identify issues, explore
ideas, and record observations pertinent to the SR 62
Streetscape Master Plan. All merchants and property
owners along the SR 62 business corridor are encouraged
to attend, as well as interested residents and other
community members. A light breakfast and lunch will be
provided.
